Biography 

Professor Jean Woo graduated MB BChir from Cambridge University in 1974, having obtained a BA degree with  First Class Honours in 1971.  After working in various posts in London in the Charing Cross Hospital, the Hammersmith Hospital and Royal Postgraduate Medical School, and the Brompton Hospital, some years in general practice in Hong Kong, she joined the Department of Medicine of Tfhe Chinese University’s newly established Medical Faculty as Clinical Lecturer in 1985, leading the development of teaching, service, and research in Geriatric Medicine, becoming Chair Professor of Medicine in 1994.  She has published over 400 articles in indexed and peer reviewed journals as well as other articles, chapters in books, and conference presentations.  She was Senior Croucher Foundation Clinical Research Fellow, Senior research Fellow in the Department of Social Medicine, Harvard university Medical School, and recipients of many competitive research grants, including the worldwide Unrestricted Nutrition Grant from BristolMyersSquibb/Mead Johnson, USA, and the National Institute of Health in her capacity as co-investigator.  Currently she is Chair Professor of Medicine, Head of the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hon Professor, Faculty of Social Science, University of Hong Kong, Project Director of the Jockey Club Cadenza Project involving various aspects of the aging Hong Kong population, Director of the SH Ho Centre for Gerontology and Geriatrics, and the Centre for Nutritional Studies.

She pioneered the development of Geriatric services in NTE, beginning with the establishment of the Geriatric Day Hospital in 1985, the non acute in patient service in Shatin Hospital in 1991, where she continues to be Honorary Consultant to the Hospital Authority and Chief of Service for Medicine and Geriatrics.  During this period, innovative models of service delivery had been developed and evaluated, such as telemedicine for residential care and community centres, models of management of chronic diseases in the community.

She has served in various University and Faculty committees, notably steering the development of the Clinical Research Ethics Committee from 1994 to 2005, as Chair of the Department of Medicine from 1993 to 1999 and Hon COS f1994-5, presiding over the merger of the Department of Medicine with the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, as Chair of the Department of Community and Family Medicine from 1999-2006, and as the first Director of the School of Public Health and Primary Care from 2001-5.  Currently she is Head of the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Chief of Service (G) Shatin Hospital, as well as Director of the centres mentioned above.
