Biography 

Professor Lau received his master and doctorate degrees from University of California, Berkeley and was a recipient of the Yale in China Scholarship, the Hewlett Packlett Fellowship and the Population Council Fellowship of the United States. He joined the Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and served as the Director of the Centre for Clinical Trials and Epidemiology Research from 1993 through 2002. He is currently a Professor of the School of Public Health and Primary Care and the Director of the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He takes part in the Faculty's biostatistical teaching both at the undergraduate and graduate levels (serving as the Co-director of the postgraduate diploma and master courses in Epidemiology and Biostatistics), as well as biostatistical consultancy services within and outside the Faculty. He is the co-director of the Division of Health Improvement of the School of Public Health and Primary Care and the director of the Centre of Health Behaviors Research, which will be established shortly. Professor Lau is also the Director of the Community Research Program on AIDS, an active research program which was established in 1996. He is a member of the Management Committee of the Institute of Chinese Medicine of the University and served as the Secretary of the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the University from Oct 2002 to Jun 2008. 

Professor Lau has authored and co-authored over 240 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals and has been awarded 62 grants as Principal Investigator and 19 grants as Co-investigator. He has been serving in the editorial boards of The Chinese Journal of Evidence-based Medicine, The International Journal Child Abuse and Neglect, and Chinese Journal of Sexually Transmitted Infections, The Open Aids Journal and Annals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as a consultant and advisor for 5 other scientific journals. He has also served as a reviewer for major journals including Lancet, American Journal of Public Health, Emerging Infectious Diseases, AIDS, Journal for Epidemiology and Community Health, Social Sciences & Medicine, Cochrane Collaboration, Journal of Gerontology, Tropical Medicine & International Health. Currently, he is the President of the Hong Kong Epidemiological Association and a consultant of the Family Health International, Shenzhen CDC, Hunan CDC, Dazhou CDC, Jiangsu CDC and the Institute for Family Planning Research in Shenzhen.

Professor Lau is very active in community services. He has been involved in various advisory committees such as those in HIV/AIDS, rehabilitation, civic education and youth development etc. He chaired the Hong Kong Coalition for AIDS Services Organizations and has been a Director of AIDS Concern in Hong Kong and an advisor of the Community Health Organization for Intervention, Care and Empowerment (CHOICE). 



Teaching Modules
Professor Lau teaches biostatistics and evidence-base medicine to undergraduate medical students. He has been a co-director of the Master and Postgraduate Diploma courses in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and is in charge of the Biostatistics modules of the courses. He also coordinates biostatistical teaching for Faculty's graduate students. Besides, he also teaches biostatistics and sexual health for different undergraduate and graduate courses, including The Chinese Medicine Program, Diploma in Women's Health Studies. Professor Lau also supervises a number of PhD and MSc students. From 2008 on, he is coordinating the Health and Society Course for undergraduates and the Health and Social Behavior Course for MPH students. He has also been supervising intern students from the Oxford University and other universities.

Professor Lau specializes in social and behavioral medicine. His diverse research interests include:
