Biography

Dr. Ignatius Yu is a Professor in the School of Public Health and Primary Care of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Visiting Professor of the School of Public Health, Sun Yat-sen University, and an Advisory Professor of the Fudan University School of Public Health, China.

He obtained his medical degree from The University of Hong Kong and the Master of Public Health degree in the US. He is a fellow of the following professional institutions: Hong Kong College of Community Medicine, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, Hong Kong Ergonomics Society, Hong Kong Institute of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (Hon.), and a Registered Member of the Ergonomics Society, UK.

His major research interest is in occupational and environmental epidemiology, especially occupational and environment causes of lung cancer and respiratory diseases. He has over 200 academic publications, including around 130 papers in refereed journals and 16 books or book chapters.

In 2003, his team applied conventional epidemiological methods together with computational fluid dynamics to study the largest community outbreak and the largest nosocomial outbreak of a new infectious disease that emerged in 2003, and shed light on the probable airborne transmission of SARS. The results were published in a landmark paper in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2004 and a major article in Clinical Infectious Disease in 2005.

He is also heading the Hong Kong Cancer Epidemiology Research Group (HKCERG), which consists of researchers from the School of Public Health and Primary Care of CUHK, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Oncology) and Cancer Registry of the Hospital Authority and the Pneumoconiosis Clinic of the Department of Health. A landmark paper on “Dose-Response Relationship between Cooking Fumes Exposures and Lung Cancer among Chinese Nonsmoking Women” was published in Cancer Research in June 2006, which was considered by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as the premier study providing human evidence on the carcinogenicity of emissions from high temperature frying. He was also invited to serve as an expert cancer epidemiologist in the IARC Monograph Working Group for evaluating the carcinogenicity of indoor air pollutants (solid fuels and cooking oil fumes) [Volume 95] held in Lyon, 10-17 October 2006.

He serves in the editorial board of a number of medical journals and is an Executive Editor of the Archives of Environmental and Occupational Health and a Senior Editor of the Hong Kong Medical Journal.

He has been serving as an examiner in the Fellowship Examinations of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians since 2005, and an examiner for the Occupational Medicine Subspecialty of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine since 1995.

He is the key advisor to the Hong Kong Hospital Authority for developing the occupational medicine care service (return to work rehabilitation program for employees injured on duty), and has been Honorary Consultant in Hospitals under the New Territories East Cluster since 2005. He has been appointed as Consultant in Occupational Medicine by the Hospital Authority since February 2008 to help further develop occupational medicine as a new specialty clinical service, and as a trainer for trainees seeking specialization and certificating in Occupational Medicine.
