Biography
Professor Griffiths worked in the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2005, when she was invited to develop public health in the post SARS period, to December 2013. The invitation to join the School followed her co chairing of the HKSAR governments inquiry into the 2003 SARS epidemic. She was Director of the School of Public Health and Primary Care and Director of Centre for Global Health. She remains Senior Adviser on International Academic Development to the Vice Chancellor. She is Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Visiting Professor and Honorary Fellow at Cardiff University, remains Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Oxford University and has links to universities in mainland China. Based in the UK whilst retaining active links to Hong Kong, she has established her own consultancy, Sian M Griffiths. In the UK she is providing advice to UK government as Healthcare Sector Specialist for Hong Kong and China in Healthcare UK and has been appointed as Associate Non executive of the Advisory Board of Public Health England. She is also playing a role in the College of Medicine in the UK, leading on education and research in integrated care.

Trained as a doctor Professor Griffiths practiced as a service based public health physician at local, regional and national level in UK before moving to her current academic post. In Hong Kong she was responsible for the clinical department of family medicine [general practice] as well as the public health education of doctors in one of Hong Kong’s 2 medical schools. Under her leadership the School of Public Health and Primary Care developed its multidisciplinary approaches to provide a full range of public health education including initiating two new BScs as well as developing a thriving graduate programme. Students in all courses are given the opportunity to experience field work in remote rural areas in China and other low income countries and the importance of global health in the curriculum is growing. Prof Griffiths continues to serve on the management board of the CCOUC with its focus on disaster response and humanitarian issues. She has advised the HKSAR government on a series of programmes including development and implementation of the strategy for non communicable diseases, policy development on reducing alcohol related harm, cancer prevention and management of legionnaires disease. She chaired the committee on Legionnaires disease for 5 years. She has played a leading role in the healthcare reform agenda by leading the work on primary care strategy development and the introduction of common guidelines for hypertension and diabetes, the first national programme for clinicians in the HKSAR. She continues to chair the Task Force on Conceptual Model and Preventive Protocols for Primary Care. She is a member of FHB's Research committee, deputy chair of the GRB and will be a member of the 2014 Research Assessment panel for medical sciences.

During her time in Hong Kong she established a wide network of contacts in mainland China and South East Asia. A former President of the UK Faculty of Public Health she has remained active in public health professional education internationally. Her Middle East experience included being a member of the National Health Authority of Qatar and has recently reviewed the MPH curriculum for Kuwait University. In 2012 she was made Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University for her work on collaborative research between Cardiff and CUHK. She was made JP by the HKSAR government in 2010 for her contribution to health in Hong Kong. She is a Patron of PHAST and maintains her UK networks.
