Biography

Professor Griffiths has been working in the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2005 when she was invited to develop public health in the post SARS period. The invitation followed her co chairing of the HKSAR governments inquiry into the 2003 SARS epidemic. She has recently finished her term as Director of the School of Public Health and Primary Care and is currently the Director of Centre for Global Health and Senior Adviser on International Academic Development to the Vice Chancellor. She is Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Visiting Professor and Honorary Fellow at Cardiff University, remains Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Oxford University and has links to universities in mainland China.

Trained as a doctor Professor Griffiths practiced as a service based public health physician at local, regional and national level in UK before moving to her current academic post. Over the last seven years in Hong Kong she has been responsible for the clinical department of family medicine [general practice] as well as the public health education of doctors in one of Hong Kong’s 2 medical schools. The School of Public Health and Primary Care has developed its multidisciplinary approaches and now provides a full range of public health education including two new BScs as well as a thriving graduate programme. Students in all courses are given the opportunity to experience field work in remote rural areas in China and other low income countries and the importance of global health in the curriculum is growing. Prof Griffiths serves on the management board of the CCOUC with its focus on disaster response and humanitarian issues. She has advised the HKSAR government on a series of programmes including development and implementation of the strategy for non communicable diseases, policy development on reducing alcohol related harm, cancer prevention and management of legionnaires disease. She chaired the committee on Legionnaires disease for 5 years. Most recently she has played a leading role in the healthcare reform agenda by leading the work on primary care strategy development and the introduction of common guidelines for hypertension and diabetes, the first national programme for clinicians in the HKSAR. She continues to chair the Task Force on Conceptual Model and Preventive Protocols for Primary Care. Her research interests include primary care, migrant health, Autism Spectrum Conditions and control of Non Communicable Disease.

During her time in Hong Kong she has established a wide network of contacts in mainland China and South East Asia. A former President of the UK Faculty of Public Health she has remained active in public health professional education internationally. Her Middle East experience includes being a member of the National Health Authority of Qatar and has recently reviewed the MPH curriculum for Kuwait University. In 2012 she has been made Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University for her work on collaborative research between Cardiff and CUHK. She was made JP by the HKSAR government in 2010 for her contribution to health in Hong Kong. She is a Patron of PHAST and maintains her UK networks. She is currently editing the Routledge Handbook of Public Health in Asia and is finalizing a report for the HKSAR government on professional regulation. As Senior Academic Adviser on International Development for her university she maintains special links with Oxford and Cambridge as well as facilitating the CUHK engagement with the World University Network.
