Research interests
  • Statistical Genetics and Bioinformatics: We develop new statistical methods and algorithms that provide accurate measure for gene-gene or gene-environmental interactions effects, and incoporate interactions in disease classification problem. For NGS data, we develop new rare variant association test and algorithm that can enhance the power for low frequency and rare variant testing. The overall target is to offer novel and powerful statistical methods to reveal the secret of human genetics data. Representative publications: Bioinformatics 2017; Nucleic Acids Research 2016, IF=9.2

  • Infectious diseases genetic epidemiology: We are interested to model the pattern of infectious disease epidemics at population level and genetic level, and to model genetic sequence evolution. Methods involved: distance of biological sequences and phylogenetic trees. Diseases worked: seasonal and pandemic influenza, new emerging virus (H7N9), norovirus, Hand-foot-mouth disease. Representative publications:  Journal of Infection 2015, 2016, IF=4.44
  • Statistical collaborations with clinical and biomedical scientists:  Genetics examples: selected seven microRNAs associated with gastric cancer progression from seven hundreds miRNAs which are later validated in-vitro and in-vivo. Epidemiology example: statistical analysis of multi-stratified and clustered sampling data sets, extreme proportion confidence interval, propensity score, etc. Representative publications: Oncogene 2015; Cancer Research 2014, IF=9.2

Software developed
  • W-test: for main effect and SNP-SNP interaction association testing in GWAS data (software page)
  • ZFA: for rare variant association tests in NGS data (upcoming...)
