Biography
Amal Mitra is a tenured full professor of public health at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He is an internationally recognized scientist and a leader in the field of public health. He developed the Epidemiology and Biostatistics track of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at USM, developed a field studies program on health care system in Bangladesh for the students from CUHK, and helped in developing MPH programs at several universities, including the North South University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kota Bharu, Malaysia. As a researcher, he has published more than 90 original research articles in peer-reviewed journals, and received grants from a number of donors including WHO, UNICEF, USAID, USDA, Swiss Development Cooperation, NASA, CDC, and Komen Foundation. He received several awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, HEADAWE Award in 2012, Mississippi’s Health Care Hero in 2011, the Fulbright Scholar Grant in 2007, Innovation Award for Applied Research in 2004, Distinguished Teaching Award in 2000, and Distinguished Faculty Researcher Award in 1999.
