Dr Billy CHIU is a Family Medicine Specialist with over 20 years of clinical experience having worked in both the public (the Hospital Authority) and private sector (Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital) in Hong Kong. He has joined the Chinese University Medical Centre as a Consultant / senior manager and Associate Professor of Practice since 2019.
He obtained the Master of Public Health (Administrative Medicine), the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Psychological Medicine, the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Geriatrics and the Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Hong Kong. He has been an active Council member of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians since 2009 and his main role includes maintaining the standard of postgraduate education and training of family medicine in Hong Kong.
His teaching philosophy stems from both his personal experiences and through his interaction with medical students over the past 20 years. He adopts the student-oriented approach in medical education and believes that the role of a clinician teacher is to identify individual student’s specific learning needs and to facilitate student’s learning through learner-centred teaching methods. His goal in medical education is to cultivate the optimal learning environment to show students how to provide holistic care to patients in clinical practice such that students can learn the attributes of being a “5-star doctor” which includes being an astute diagnostician, being up-to-date in medical knowledge, being a good communicator, being an advocate for patients, and demonstrating appropriate use of health resources. Dr CHIU has been awarded faculty teaching medal by the University of Hong Kong in 2011.
Upon joining CU Medical Centre, Dr Chiu has been playing an active role in the commissioning and management of the private hospital which has a social mission to serve the public by enabling private healthcare services in Hong Kong to be more affordable and to bridge the gap between the private public services.
