[Event Highlights] Participatory health research and designathons for health: A participatory workshop

Organised by the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care (JCSPHPC), the “Participatory health research and designathons for health: A participatory workshop” was successfully held on 26 June 2024. We are delighted to have invited Professor Joseph Tucker, Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Chunyan Li, Postdoctoral Fellow, Tokyo College, The University of Tokyo, Dr. Gifty Marley, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of North Carolina Project-China (UNC Project-China) and Ms. Yusha Tao, Program Coordinator, UNC Project-China, to serve as facilitators for the workshop.

Professor Candy Wong, Assistant Professor, JCSPHPC welcomed all participants at the start of the participatory workshop

The event was meticulously organized to provide participants a deeper understanding of participatory health research defined by WHO, through the introduction of designathon and participatory activities. A designathon is a three-stage participatory activity informed by design thinking that includes preparation with end-users, an intensive period of collaboration, and follow-up activities for implementation and research.

Participants were divided into groups to share insights on specific public health topics and present the final group work to the larger audience, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of discussion and ideas exchange. The workshop was not only intellectually stimulating but also allowed participants to review some of the fundamentals of participatory research, which is a cornerstone of public health.
