Predict and Design Influenza Vaccine Antigen by Using A.I. 開發人工智能演算法助精確預測及設計流感疫苗抗原


The research team, led by Professor Maggie Wang and Professor Benny Zee of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK, has developed algorithms to predict future mutations of influenza virus and design influenza vaccine antigen. The technology combined knowledge from virology, biostatistics, epigenetics, and used big data with artificial intelligence computation. When used to design the antigen of seasonal influenza vaccines, the technology is estimated to improve vaccine effectiveness by 20-40%.

Professor Wang and Professor Zee co-founded Beth Bioinformatics Co., Ltd for this technology in 2018. They hope to continue promote and develop better antigen design for all of mankind.

由中大賽馬會公共衛生學院及基層醫療學院的王海天教授和徐仲鍈教授帶領的研究團隊,透過結合病毒學、生物統計與基因組學,用大數據與人工智能運算法,成功製作出可以準確預測流感病毒變異的電腦模型。用於季節性流感疫苗的抗原設計上,估計可提升疫苗效用高達20-40%。

季節性流感疫苗生産一般需要6-9個月的時間,但期間病毒可能已經再次變異。加上目前全球僅為南、北半球分開兩種流感疫苗,而一個半球不同地區的流感病毒亦可以相差甚遠,導致在香港也不時會出現某年流感疫苗保護效用較低的情況。中大團隊的技術則可以把病毒未來的變異納入疫苗設計的考慮,而且針對不同地區的本地流行病毒作出調整,由此提升疫苗設計的準確度和保護效用。

王海天教授和徐仲鍈教授於2018年為有關科技成立貝思生物科技有限公司,推動為大眾製作與改良更好的流感疫苗設計。
