Medical Programmes
As part of the Faculty of Medicine, our Division staff is engaged in the coordination and teaching of the following courses of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) Programme. Our educational perspectives reflect the need to develop a community based approach to care along with the development of skills needed to enhance health in the community.
MEDF1120: Public Health
This course introduces year 1 students to current global public health issues, their determinants and public health interventions including medical humanitarian response in crisis, emergencies and disasters, emerging infectious diseases, management of non-communicable diseases, as well as health service related challenges. Students also interview their first patient contact to gain understanding of chronic disease in the community.
MEDU2500 & MEDU3500: Doctor and Patient I & II
This course exposes year 2 and year 3 medical students to the role of the family doctor in the community in the preclinical years and an in-depth analysis of the doctor and patient interaction. This course encompasses clinical visits in the community, alongside interviews and home visits whilst following up a family of a newborn infant in the first few years of life and integrating a biopsychosocial approach to health and multidisciplinary teaching from obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry and family medicine.
MEDU3340 & MEDU4340: Integrated Clinical Communication Skills I & II
This is a blended learning course combining online learning, video vignettes and experiential skills workshops using video review and roleplay on communication and consultation skills. This course runs alongside the junior clerkship in Medicine and Surgery in year 4 and also clinical specialties of obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry and community and family medicine so that students can contextualize their learning and enhance their communication skills with patients. Fundamental teaching in active listening, communication models to advanced skills. These include generic skills such as consent, managing consultations, breaking bad news as well as clinical scenarios specific to each clinical specialty.
MEDU4010: Community and Family Medicine
This clinical specialty in year 5 provides an overview of community medicine, family medicine and public health. Topics include epidemiology, evidence based medicine, occupational and environmental medicine, evidence based medicine, health systems and clinical family medicine. Multimodal teaching includes community health clinic and services attachment, attachment to public primary care services and multidisciplinary teams, private family physicians as well as lectures, skills workshop and home visits.
